Outdoor activities are a great way to strengthen the bond with our four-legged friends and offer them new and stimulating experiences. Kayaking is an activity that can be done in pairs with your dog, as long as you take certain precautions and follow a few tips. So how do you prepare and how do you enjoy a kayak trip with your dog?

Preparing your dog for the kayak adventure
Get your dog used to kayaking: let him approach, get on, and off the kayak out of the water so he can get familiar with the equipment and feel comfortable. Train your dog to respond to cues, such as “sit,” “stay,” to facilitate communication during the activity. Make sure your dog can swim and is comfortable in the water. You can teach him to swim gradually in a safe, shallow environment.

Select the right equipment

To ensure the safety and comfort of your dog during the activity, it is important to choose the right equipment. Opt for a kayak that is stable and spacious, with enough space for your dog to sit or lie down comfortably. Equip your dog with a life jacket adapted to his size and weight, with a handle to facilitate recovery in the event of a fall into the water. Use a short, water-resistant leash to attach your dog to the kayak if necessary, without compromising their freedom of movement. Remember to bring water and a bowl to keep your dog hydrated during the activity, as well as treats and toys to reward and entertain your dog.

Choosing the right course and weather conditions

For your kayak trip with your dog to be a success, it is important to choose a suitable route and to take into account the weather conditions. Choose calm, shallow waters, such as lakes, rivers, or canals, to avoid waves and currents that could destabilize kayaking. Check the weather before you leave and avoid going out in case of strong winds, rain, or extreme temperatures that could make the experience unpleasant or dangerous for your dog. Plan regular breaks to allow your dog to relax, stretch his paws, and defecate.

Respect safety regulations and the environment

When kayaking with your dog, it is essential to respect certain safety rules and to protect the environment:

  • Make sure your dog always wears his life jacket and strap him to the kayak if necessary to prevent him from falling into the water unintentionally.
  • Keep your dog under control and avoid letting him get near other boats, wildlife, or protected areas.
  • Learn recovery techniques in the event of a fall into the water so you can react quickly and safely if necessary.
  • Pick up your dog's droppings and take all of your waste with you to keep the area clean and protect the ecosystem.
Share the experience with other enthusiasts

Kayaking with your dog is an activity that lends itself well to sharing with other water sports and dog lovers. Join groups or kayak clubs to exchange tips, experiences, and dog-friendly routes. Participate in events or meetings organized around the activity, to have fun and create memories with your dog and other enthusiasts.
